Goodland Crush

Crushing oilseeds, fueling markets

Scoular is committed to investing in the intersection of agriculture and energy. Our dual oilseed crush facility in Goodland, Kansas, supports the growing renewable fuels market, processing both canola and soybeans into valuable vegetable oils for biofuel producers to make carbon renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel.

Through our investment, and producer programs like Canola MVP™, local farmers have opportunity to reach new markets with resources, reassurance and revenue potential. Our Goodland Crush facility will produce canola meal and soybean meal to supply the dairy, poultry, beef, and pork markets—creating a new, reliable supply of locally-produced animal feed.

SCOULAR OILSEED PROCESSING:

Reliable, flexible processing

With proximity to oilseed production, on-site and nearby storage, and excellence in logistics management, Goodland Crush will process oilseeds year-round. The multi-seed facility will crush 11 million bushels of oilseeds annually.

One bushel, two outputs

Winter canola helps fuel the feed and renewable markets. With a high oil content (yielding twice as much oil compared to soybeans), each bushel of winter canola produces two outputs—62% into canola meal pellets for animal feed, and 38% into super degummed canola oil for the biofuel market.

Efficiency upgrades, operational enhancements

Goodland Crush boasts a number of upgrades, including benefits for producers that increase processing rates and significantly update seed receiving and handling, including a new scale, high-speed leg and dump pit. Facility upgrades include new crush equipment, extractor, and a state-of-the-art pelleter. These upgrades increased capacity by 30 percent to 1,000MT of oilseeds daily.

Supply chain strength

Our history of service in the region goes back more than 25 years. We operate 20+ facilities in Kansas, including three longstanding grain elevators in the Goodland area. Our transportation and trade network enables us to move product efficiently and reliably.

Strategically placed at the center of agriculture and energy

The renewable fuels market is poised to experience exponential growth over the next several years. We’re proud to participate in the decarbonization of fuel streams through our commitment to oilseed processing at our Goodland, Kansas, dual oilseed crush facility, and increasing winter canola acres thru our Canola MVP producer program.

Winter canola can help producers improve their soil health as well as wheat yields post-canola by as much as 20 percent. Our program helped to increase winter canola acres planted in the region by 30,000 acres in one year, and we continue to have a focus on increasing acres.

Oilseed crushing for renewable fuels and animal feed

What is oilseed processing?

Oilseed processing prepares seeds for the extraction of oil and the creation of meal byproducts… Our facility features a ??Mechanical extraction?? process and takes the oilseeds through cleaning, drying, dehulling… and finally ABCD. We also degum our oil( both soybean and canola, or just canola?)

Why are vegetable oils valuable for the biofuels market?

Canola in particular, because of its high-oil content, is highly valued in the renewable fuels sector. As the industry looks to sustainable aviation fuels to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions, low-carbon crops and their oils will see increased demand. Annual U.S. renewable diesel production is anticipated to grow to 6 billion gallons by 2025, according to the International Energy Agency.

Which animal feed markets benefit from oilseed crushing?

Dairies and other livestock producers in neighboring states, including beef, poultry and pork, will have access to locally produced vegetable protein products as a byproduct of the oilseed processing—both soybean meal and canola meal. Our state-of-the-art pelleter will produce high-quality, nutritious canola meal pellets that provide essential amino acids into animal feed diets and help limit shrink.

What types of oilseeds can Goodland Crush process?

Scoular will primarily process canola and soybeans, switching to accommodate oilseed or softseed availability. As other low-carbon crops develop in the future, Scoular will be able to process those new seeds.

Ag and energy in action

Scoular’s Goodland Crush dual oilseed processing facility is where ag and energy meet. Year-round, our facility can help edible oil refineries and biofuel producers access needed vegetable oils, both soybean oil and canola oil, for human consumption or renewable fuel use. Producers of both soybeans and winter canola can access new markets, and help support the animal feed industry by contributing to our locally-produced soybean meal and canola meal.
